Background

The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) Committee on Statistics endorsed the Disaster-Related Statistics Framework (DRSF) in 2018. This would require several components:  a) a Disaster-Related Statistical Framework; b) engagement within the region and the rest of the world; c) a TWG as a platform for working together and exchanging information and experience; and d) a training scheme. The Committee, therefore, expressed its support for the development of training materials to support the implementation of the framework in the region.

Following up on the recommendations of the Committee to build capacity in countries for the compilation of disaster related statistics, ESCAP in collaboration with partner agencies, has developed training materials for in person workshops. In order to reach a broader audience in a cost-effective manner, the materials were compiled and transformed into an e-learning course.

The course is aimed at those working in national statistical offices, national disaster management agencies, and others who are involved in the disaster-related statistics. ESCAP expects that the course will build the capacity for the compilation of disaster related statistics for enhancing disaster management and promote the risk-informed sustainable development in the countries and, at the same time, facilitate better national monitoring and reporting on the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Learning Objective

Participants will be able to relate the concepts of disaster related statistics to their functions and responsibilities in the contexts of their respective countries and employ such skills to contribute to the monitoring and reporting on global frameworks including Sendai Framework and SDGs.

The E-learning course is a collaboration of ESCAP and the Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (SIAP), with SIAP as lead. It will be a future course of SIAP in 2021.

Partner agencies: United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), Asian and Pacific Center for the Development of Disaster Information Management (APDIM) and United Nations Economic and Social Commission for West Asia (ESCWA).
